Food is a deeply political topic. Whether it's fast food or a home cooked meal, what we eat, how we eat it, and how it's grown are all outgrowths of public policy at every level of government. Many people may not think about it (or want to think about it), but every time we eat something, we are engaging with a long history of food policy and the political system that created it.
The first part of my career was focused on researching and supporting changes to policy in pursuit of a more equitable, sustainable, healthy, and resilient food economy. While I decided to focus my energy on growing food rather than research, my passion for policy has never faded. In addition to being a source of quality produce, my farm is also a means for me to talk about how policy shapes - for better and for worse - our food environment and society more broadly.
Towards that end, the articles posted here provide short, approachable explainers of policy issues impacting farming, food, and local economies so that you can better understand the policy behind your food and your local economy. While my goal here is primarily educational, education is meaningless unless it leads to action. Towards that end, I provide links below where you can look up your state and federal representatives and I encourage you to contact them about issues that matter to you.
Finally, if there is a topic or question that you're interested in hearing about, please send me an email. I'd love to hear from you.
